about

Banish Misfortune is said to have first been published in the book “Ancient Irish Music” by P.W. Joyce under the title ‘The Bag of Meal” in 1873. The song is also said to have played an apotropaic role in Irish culture, supposedly having the power to avert bad luck or evil intentions, and was played when misfortune struck.
